Reflecting on the Ride: From Curbside to 2026
This March 17th marks 6 years at Pharmhouse, and what a ride it has been. We opened our doors in 2020, just a few short days before the state went into lockdown for COVID. For several years, we operated with a small, dedicated crew primarily under a curbside model, slowly inviting the community back inside as restrictions lifted.
The market has shifted dramatically since then. It’s remarkable to look back on the days of begging cultivators for $4,000 wholesale pounds—a stark contrast to the $10–$15 1/8ths and $1 pre-rolls we see today.
Growth, Lessons, and Coming Home
While some of our competition expanded rapidly, I’ll admit that at the time, I felt like we were being left behind. In hindsight, I am so thankful for our slow and steady progression—one built on organic growth and predictable demand.
- 2022: Opened our cultivation facility.
- 2024: Expanded with a second retail location in New Buffalo.
- 2025: After experiencing the “border town frenzy” and the challenges a small operator faces against unlimited licensing and big-player pricing games, we chose to exit New Buffalo in September.
Leaving something we built from the ground up was difficult, but it proved to be the right move. That exit positioned us to weather the uncertainty of the 24% wholesale tax enacted on January 1st, 2026.
Back to Our Roots
With Grand Rapids as our sole focus, we are stoked to be home and returning to our roots as a medical marijuana operation. In late 2025, we gave away 1,000 medical cards so our community could avoid the excise tax. We felt this gift was the right thing to do—returning the benefit to the people who support us.
It’s All About the Team
Through these six years, I am most thankful for the amazing team that makes this possible. We have arguably one of the most tenured dispensary staffs in all of Grand Rapids. I am incredibly proud of the space they hold and the service they provide.
